Categories & Organization

Use categories to organize locations and color-code your maps

Last updated: January 17, 2026

Categories & Organization

Categories help you organize locations on your maps by grouping them and giving each group a distinct color. This guide covers how categories actually work in Mapiry.

What Are Categories?

Categories are simple labels you apply to locations. Each category has only two properties:

Name: The category label (e.g., "Restaurants", "Hotels", "Parks")
Color: A hex color code (e.g., "#FF0000" for red)

That's it. Categories in Mapiry are intentionally simple.

What Categories Are NOT

To set accurate expectations:

  • ❌ Categories do not have icons
  • ❌ Categories do not have descriptions
  • ❌ Locations cannot belong to multiple categories (one category per location)
  • ❌ Categories do not have custom marker styles
  • ❌ You cannot merge or bulk-edit categories
  • ❌ There are no category templates
  • ❌ There is no category analytics

Categories are just a name and a color for organizing locations.

Creating Categories

In the Map Editor

When creating or editing your map, you can add categories:

  1. Create or edit a map
  2. Add a category through the categories interface
  3. Give it a name and choose a color
  4. Save

The exact UI varies, but the concept is simple: name + color.

While Adding Locations

You can also create categories on-the-fly:

  1. When adding a location, select the category field
  2. If the category doesn't exist, create a new one
  3. Enter the name and color
  4. The location is assigned to this new category

Assigning Categories to Locations

Each location can have exactly one category assigned:

  1. Edit a location
  2. Choose a category from the dropdown
  3. Save

The location will appear on the map using that category's color.

No Category is OK

Locations don't require a category. Uncategorized locations typically appear in a default color (usually blue).

Category Colors

Colors are the most important part of categories since they affect how markers appear on the map.

Choosing Colors

  • Use hex color codes (e.g., #FF0000, #00FF00, #0000FF)
  • Choose distinct colors so categories are easy to distinguish
  • Test colors on different base map styles (streets, satellite, dark, etc.)
  • Limit yourself to 6-8 categories maximum for clarity

Color Best Practices

Good color choices:

  • High contrast between adjacent categories
  • Colors that match common associations (green for parks, red for restaurants)
  • Colors visible on both light and dark backgrounds

Bad color choices:

  • Similar shades that are hard to distinguish (light blue vs. teal)
  • Colors that disappear on certain base maps (yellow on satellite)
  • Too many categories with too many colors (becomes confusing)

Managing Categories

Editing Categories

  1. Go to the categories list in your map editor
  2. Click the category you want to edit
  3. Change the name or color
  4. Save

All locations using that category update automatically with the new color.

Deleting Categories

When you delete a category:

  1. The category is removed
  2. All locations in that category become uncategorized
  3. The locations themselves are not deleted

Be careful when deleting categories - you'll need to manually reassign locations if you want them categorized.

Reordering Categories

The order you see categories listed in the UI typically depends on creation order. There's no explicit reordering feature, so plan your categories thoughtfully from the start.

Using Categories for Organization

Why Use Categories?

While editing:

  • Visually distinguish location types at a glance
  • Group related locations together
  • Make maps with many locations less confusing

For viewers:

  • Understand what each marker represents by color
  • Maps with categories are easier to read

Category Naming Guidelines

Be specific and clear:

  • ✅ "Italian Restaurants"
  • ✅ "Budget Hotels"
  • ❌ "Type 1"
  • ❌ "Category A"

Be consistent:

  • Choose singular OR plural (not both)
  • Use consistent capitalization
  • Follow a naming pattern

Plan ahead:

  • Choose names that won't feel limiting later
  • Leave room for additional categories
  • Keep category count reasonable (6-8 max recommended)

Common Category Setups

  • Hotels (#0000FF - blue)

  • Ticket Booths (#9333EA - purple)
  • Parking (#6B7280 - gray)

What's NOT Available

Many features mentioned in other documentation sources don't actually exist:

No Icons

Categories only have colors, not icons. All markers use the same pin shape, just in different colors.

No Multiple Categories Per Location

Each location can only belong to one category. There's no multi-select option.

No Bulk Category Operations

You cannot:

  • Bulk change categories for multiple locations
  • Merge categories
  • Bulk delete/reassign

You must edit locations individually.

No Category Filtering (for viewers)

There's no built-in category filter widget that lets viewers toggle categories on/off. Categories are for organization and color-coding only.

No Category Analytics

There are no category-specific analytics showing which categories are most viewed or engaged with.

No Advanced Styling

You cannot set different marker styles (size, shape, icons) per category. Categories only control color.

Troubleshooting

Category color not showing

  • Refresh the page
  • Check that you saved the color change
  • Verify the location is actually assigned to that category
  • Try a different color (some colors may be hard to see on certain base maps)

Can't delete a category

  • Make sure you're the map owner or have edit access
  • Try removing locations from the category first
  • Refresh the page and try again

Colors look bad on my base map

  • Try a different base map style (e.g., switch from satellite to streets)
  • Choose higher-contrast colors
  • Test colors on multiple base map styles before committing

Too many categories

  • Consolidate similar categories
  • Remove categories that aren't providing value
  • Remember: 6-8 categories maximum for clarity

Best Practices

1. Start Simple

Begin with 3-5 core categories. Add more only if truly necessary.

2. Plan Your Colors

Choose all your colors upfront to ensure they work well together and are distinguishable.

3. Test on Multiple Base Maps

View your map on different base map styles (streets, satellite, dark) to make sure colors are visible.

4. Be Consistent

If creating multiple maps, use the same category names and colors across them for consistency.

5. Less is More

More categories = more visual clutter. Keep it simple and focused.
