Share your maps via direct links, social media, or embedded on websites

Last updated: January 17, 2026

Sharing Your Maps

Once you've created a map, you can share it with others through various methods. This guide covers what's actually available in Mapiry.

Making Your Map Public

Maps can be either public or private.

Public vs. Private Maps

Public Maps:

  • Anyone with the link can view
  • Appear on your public profile (/u/username)
  • Appear in the Explore page
  • Can be embedded on websites
  • Available to all users (Free and Pro)

Private Maps (Pro Feature):

  • Only you (the owner) can view
  • Not discoverable in Explore
  • Can generate temporary access tokens for sharing
  • Requires Pro subscription

Setting Your Map to Public/Private

When creating or editing a map:

  1. Look for the Visibility section
  2. Select Public for anyone to view, or Private (Pro only) for restricted access
  3. Save your map

You can change this anytime. Note that Free users can only create public maps - the private option requires Pro.

Sharing Methods

Every map has a URL you can share:

Format:

  • With custom slug: mapiry.com/m/your-custom-slug
  • With ID: mapiry.com/map/abc123xyz

How to get the link:

  1. Open your map
  2. Click the Share button
  3. Copy the link
  4. Paste it anywhere (email, chat, social media)

Custom Slugs: When creating a map, you can set a custom slug for a more readable URL:

  • Must be unique
  • Alphanumeric characters and hyphens only
  • No spaces or special characters

Example good slugs:

  • tokyo-ramen-spots
  • sf-hidden-gems
  • italy-2026-trip

2. Social Media Sharing

Mapiry has built-in sharing for these platforms:

Facebook - Share to your timeline or groups
Twitter - Tweet with map preview
WhatsApp - Send to contacts or groups
Email - Opens your default email client

How it works:

  1. Click Share on your map
  2. Click the platform icon
  3. A sharing dialog opens with the map URL
  4. Add your message and post

All shares are tracked in analytics (see below).

Click the Copy Link button in the share dialog to copy the URL to your clipboard.

Embedding Maps

You can embed your public maps on websites using an iframe.

Getting Embed Code

  1. Open your map
  2. Click ShareEmbed tab
  3. Customize embed options (if available)
  4. Copy the iframe code
  5. Paste it into your website's HTML

Basic embed code:

<iframe
  src="https://mapiry.com/embed/your-map-id"
  width="100%"
  height="500px"
  frameborder="0"
  allowfullscreen
></iframe>

See Embedding Maps for more details about embed customization.

Temporary Access for Private Maps

Need to share a private map with specific people? Use temporary access tokens.

How Access Tokens Work

Access tokens allow anyone with a special link to view your private map for a limited time:

Expiration: 24 hours (fixed, not customizable)

Token URL format:

mapiry.com/map/abc123?accessToken=secret-token-here

Creating an Access Token

  1. Open your private map
  2. Click ShareTemporary Access tab
  3. Click Generate Token
  4. Copy the link with the token
  5. Send it to whoever needs access

The token expires in 24 hours. After that, the link won't work anymore.

Use Cases

  • Share work-in-progress maps with clients
  • Preview maps before making them public
  • Time-limited sharing for events
  • Give temporary access to collaborators

Managing Tokens

You can revoke tokens before they expire:

  1. Go to your map settings
  2. View active access tokens
  3. Revoke tokens you no longer need

Analytics & Tracking

Mapiry tracks basic analytics for your maps.

What's Tracked

Views:

  • Counted once per IP address per 24 hours
  • Prevents inflation from page refreshes
  • Both logged-in and anonymous viewers

Shares:

  • Tracks which platform was used (Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Email, Copy Link)
  • Only tracks shares made through the Share button
  • Doesn't track what people say or who views after sharing

Likes:

  • IP-based for anonymous users
  • User-based for logged-in users

Viewing Analytics

From your dashboard:

  1. Click on a map
  2. View analytics showing:
    • Total views over time
    • Total shares by platform
    • Total likes
    • Trends

See Analytics for more details.

What's NOT Available

To set accurate expectations, here's what Mapiry does not currently support:

No Custom Domain

  • ❌ Can't use your own domain (maps.yourdomain.com)
  • Maps always use mapiry.com URLs
  • Pro users get white-label embeds but not custom domains

No QR Codes

  • ❌ No QR code generation
  • Must use third-party QR code generator with your map URL

No Advanced Access Control

  • ❌ Can't customize token expiration (fixed at 24 hours)
  • ❌ Can't password-protect without tokens
  • ❌ Can't whitelist specific users

No Comments or Interactions

  • ❌ No comment system on maps
  • ❌ No replies or discussions
  • ❌ Only likes (no other reactions)

No Download/Export Control

  • ❌ Can't prevent exports (not implemented yet)
  • ❌ Can't disable embedding

No Social Previews Control

  • ❌ Can't customize Open Graph images
  • ❌ Can't set custom preview text
  • Uses map title and description automatically

White-Label Embeds (Pro)

Pro users can remove Mapiry branding from embedded maps:

  • No "Powered by Mapiry" text
  • Professional, unbranded experience
  • Only applies to embeds (not direct links)

This is the only Pro-specific sharing feature. All other sharing capabilities are the same for Free and Pro users.

Sharing Best Practices

1. Write Good Titles & Descriptions

Map titles and descriptions appear in social previews. Make them descriptive and engaging.

2. Set Custom Slugs

Use readable, SEO-friendly slugs instead of random IDs.

3. Choose the Right Privacy Setting

  • Public: For maps you want others to discover
  • Private: For personal or work-in-progress maps

4. Use Temporary Access Wisely

Generate tokens only when needed and revoke them when done.

5. Test Your Embeds

Preview embeds before publishing to ensure they work on your website.

Troubleshooting

Map won't embed

  • Check that the map is public
  • Verify your website allows iframes
  • Some platforms (Medium, etc.) restrict embeds

Share button not working

  • Check your browser's popup blocker
  • Make sure you're online
  • Try copying the link manually

Access token not working

  • Check if token has expired (24 hours)
  • Verify you copied the entire URL including the token
  • Generate a new token and try again

Not showing in Explore

  • Make sure map is set to public
  • New maps may take a few minutes to appear
  • Check that the map has locations
